What is B-Complex used for?

B-Complex is the term that incorporates all the B Vitamins into a single formula. They are water soluble vitamins necessary for normal metabolism of the body which includes but not limited to: the production of energy, the manufacturing of red blood cells and normal brain and nerve function. Patients who have absorption issues or have a diet deficient in B vitamins will need to supplement it.

How much B-Complex should I take?

The recommended daily intakes are different for every B Vitamin. However generally speaking the amounts you need per day are very low as compared to those included in supplements. Higher doses of B vitamins may provide extra benefits such as increased energy as opposed to just taking the recommended daily intake. B-Complex usually comes in B-50, B-75 and B-100. The "50" means that each B Vitamin will come in 50mg and 50mcg etc. Technically taking 1 tablet of a B-50 supplement will satisfy most people's needs, however, it doesn't hurt to take a higher dose. All-in-all, as long as you follow the instructions on the label and don't double up on supplements containing B-Vitamins (especially if you're using a B-100 supplement), you will be fine.

When should I take B-Complex?

You can take B-Complex anytime. Since B Vitamins are water soluble, you can just take with water. And if you experience stomach upset, take with food.

What are the side effects and precautions of B-Complex?

Overdosing on B-Vitamins is hard but even if you do, they'll be excreted from the kidneys the following day since they are water-soluble and are not stored in the body. Any side-effects should subside when you stop taking B-Complex. These include: skin flushing from B-3, peripheral neuropathy from B-6 and yellow urine from B-2 and B-12. General side effects include stomach upset, headache and diarrhoea. Note that if peripheral neuropathy does occur (occurs rarely at doses above 10mg, but more above 50mg), be sure to stop taking any B-6 supplements as the longer you take it, the longer the side effect will persist and may cause permanent damage. With that being said, follow the manufacturer's instructions and you should be fine. Most individuals will get enough B Vitamins from their diet but otherwise, it is best to discuss with your doctor to see if you should take a B-Complex supplement.
