Solgar d-Apha Tocopherol Description

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient and is the body’s primary, fat-soluble anti-oxidant. Vitamin E provides nutritional support for the immune system. It helps fight cell-damaging free radicals that cause oxidative stress in the body, which may contribute to the premature aging of cells. This formulation provides a natural source of Vitamin E as d-Alpha Tocopherol, and mixed Tocopherols including d-Gamma, d-Delta and d-Beta Tocopherols. It is offered in oil-based softgels to promote optimal absorption and assimilation.

What is Vitamin E used for?

Vitamin E is a fat soluble antioxidant that nutritionally supports the immune system. It is used primarily for skin health, eye health, heart health and immune health. Newer studies suggest a role in bone preservation. Furthermore, there has been studies indicating that Vitamin E when applied topically may help reduce wrinkles, fade hyperpigmentation and improve moisturization.

How much Vitamin E should I take?

Taken orally, Vitamin E is usually taken at 200iu to 40000iu (of the natural form) per day. Anything higher is considered controversial over the risk vs benefits of Vitamin E. In fact, the recommended daily intake of the average adult is only around 22.4iu per day.
You can also break the capsules and apply the contents directly onto your skin as a topical oil preferably at night. This product contains Safflower Oil, Soybean Oil and Glycerin as carriers, perfect for moisturizing and carrying Vitamin E into your skin. Unlike a serum bottle, these capsules protect Vitamin E from oxidizing once the bottle is opened, thus preserving its properties.

When should I take Vitamin E?

You can take Vitamin E anytime during the day preferably with some oily food as it is oil soluble. When applied topically, you'll want to do it at night as sunlight can destroy Vitamin E molecules if you walk out with it during daytime.

What are the side effects of Vitamin E?

Typical side effects include nausea, vomiting and headache. Vitamin E when taken at high doses can also cause increased risk of bleeding thus a theoretical risk of haemorrhagic stroke. Hence patients taking blood thinners and at risk of cardiovascular disease should speak with your doctors before taking this supplement. As Vitamin E is an oil soluble vitamin, it will be stored in the body so taking a high dose at an extended duration can increase the risk of side effects.

What are the different Vitamin E forms?

Vitamin E comes in 8 different forms but only one is recognized to be the most potent in the body, and that is Alpha-Tocopherol (or D-Alpha-Tocopherol). Another common synthetic version of supplemental Vitamin E is DL-Alpha-Toceopherol. There is much controversy surrounding this form so best to stay away from it. Mixed tocopherols refer to a mix of 4 different tocopherols and some may consider it superior to just consuming Alpha-Tocopherol.
