FAQ

What is Methylcobalamin used for?

Methylcobalamin is a form of Vitamin B12 which is important for brain and nerve function, red blood cell production and energy production. It is most commonly used to treat Vitamin B12 deficiency, which is most commonly caused by a lack of meat in diet.

How much Methylcobalamin should I take?

The recommended daily intake for Vitamin B12 is 2.4mcg per day. However for patients with Vitamin B12 deficiency, doses of 1000mcg to 5000mcg daily is common. Patients with severe B12 deficiency may need an injection. Some multivitamins contain lower doses of Vitamin B12 but should be more than enough of your daily needs.

When should I take Methylcobalamin?

You should take Methylcobalamin in the morning as it can support energy production. Since Vitamin B12 is water soluble and is readily absorbed in the gut, you can take it with or without food. However if it causes stomach upset, take with food.

What are the side effects and precautions of Methylcobalamin?

High doses of Vitamin B12 may cause headache, nausea and vomiting as well as diarrhoea. You can avoid this by taking a lower dose or taking it on alternate days. People who are low in potassium should also be cautious of taking high doses of Vitamin B12 as it can further lower potassium levels. However Methylcobalamin is very well tolerated and should not pose an issue for the general public. If unsure, be sure to ask your physician.

What's so special about Methylcobalamin?

There are multiple forms of Vitamin B12, such as Methylcobalamin, Cyanocobalamin, Hydroxocobalamin and Adenosylcobalamin. The most common forms of Vitamin B12 are Methylcobalamin and Cyanocobalamin, where the former is naturally occuring while the latter is synthetic. Methylcobalamin is also the most bio-available form of Vitamin B12 and does not need conversion to be used by the body. Adenosylcobalamin is also naturally occuring and performs a slightly differerent function to Methylcobalamin in the body. Hydroxocobalamin on the other hand, is artificially made and is mainly used as an injection.
