What is Vitamin D3 used for?

Vitamin D3 is obtained through sun exposure and is one of the most important vitamin that's hard to obtain as we age. It helps support a healthy immune system, strong bones, nerve and muscle function as well as cardiovascular health.

How much Vitamin D3 should I take?

For healthy individuals, 1000iu daily is the general norm. However if your're deficient in Vitamin D, doses from 2000iu to 100,000iu has been used, which will be recommended on doctor's advice depending on your blood levels. If you do wish to take such high doses on your own accord, as an example, you can take 5000iu every other day for 2-4 weeks, or 50,000iu daily for 3 days only. After that, you'll typically get a retest to see if you need another course of Vitamin D. The key here is the higher the dose, the shorter the duration you should take, as you don't want to overdose on Vitamin D either.

When should I take Vitamin D3?

Vitamin D3 can be taken anytime during the day but preferably with food as it is an oil soluble vitamin.

What are the side effects and precautions of Vitamin D3?

Typically speaking you won't get side effects unless your Vitamin D levels are too high. These include weakness, metallic tast in mouth, muscle or bone pain. And since Vitamin D3 overdose leads to high Calcium levels, symptoms could include nausea, vomiting and kidney failure. Not to mention arterial calcification (too much Vitamin D will worsen it). However it is hard to overdose on vitamin D and as long as you stick to the recommended doses, you'll be fine. There's no real contraindication or precaution when supplementing with Vitamin D3.
