Solgar Ester-C Plus 500mg Vitamin C, 100 veg caps

Ester-C is the tradename for Calcium Ascorbate which is a mineralized form of Vitamin C. This takes away the acidic properties that normal Vitamin C has which means reduced gastro side effects. When compared to another common mineral form, Sodium Ascorbate, Ester-C does not deliver that excess Sodium which can increase blood pressure.

Ester-C delivers the same benefits as Vitamin C, an antioxidant which is commonly used for immunity, cell repair, cardiovascular health and much more.

Typical doses range from 500mg to 1000mg daily but doses up to 4g has been used. However it is not recommended to take doses too high (above 2g per day) as excess Vitamin C will not be absorbed, will be excreted and may produce side effects including an increased risk of kidney stones. Most people taking Vitamin C will only need around 500mg to 1g per day. Interestingly, Vitamin C 500mg daily for 4 weeks have been used to prevent carpel tunnel syndrome after Wrist Fracture surgeries.

If you're taking more than 1g per day, it is recommended to split the dose into two to improve absorption. You don't have to take Ester-C with food and can be taken anytime during the day.

Ester-C is very well tolerated and should not produce the gastrointestinal side effects as normal Vitamin C will, such as reflux, stomach cramps and diarrhoea. However, when taken in high doses, Ester-C may still cause stomach cramps and diarrhoea. Taking Vitamin C in excess may also increase your risk of kidney stones slightly, so be sure to speak with a professional to determine how much you need before taking it.
