Selenium is an essential trace mineral and antioxidant that is an integral part of glutathione peroxidase which protects cell components from oxidative damage caused by peroxidases. Mainly used for selenium deficiency, and to promote healthy thyroid and cardiovascular function. Some hair, skin and nail supplements may also include selenium.
The general dose range is 100mcg to 400mcg per day, while the recommended daily intake from foods is around 55mcg only.
You can take it with or without food any time of the day as it is readily absorbed in the small intestine.
Selenium is generally very well tolerated, however you may experience side effects if overdosed (e.g. at doses of 700mcg). These include a metallic taste or garlic breath, nail brittleness/discorloration, hairloss, fatigue and nausea/vomiting. People with known gastrointestinal absorption issues may not be able to absorb selenium, and people with kidney impairment may not be able to excrete selenium properly.
It contains SelenoExcell, a specialized form of high selenium yeast that is a clinically proven superior form to selenomethionine, a common synthetic form. SelenoExcell was the first and only to meet batch-to-batch standardization criteria set forth by the Division of Cancer Prevention at the National Cancer Institute.
