What is 5-HTP used for?

5-HTP is most commonly used for depression. Other uses such as insomnia, fibromyalgia, weight loss and headaches are less researched. 5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin so most of its effects will be attributable to this substance.

How much 5-HTP should I take?

Typical doses range from 100mg to 300mg daily in divided doses depending on the indication. Always start low and go slow (for example, 100mg daily for 4-6 weeks, then increase to 200mg daily if needed for depression). Never start with a high dose due to risk of side effects.

When should I take 5-HTP?

Generally speaking, take 5-HTP at night as it may cause drowsiness. However, if you need to take it multiple times a day you can space it apart evenly, being aware of the side effects. If using for weight loss, take it 30 minutes before a meal.

What are the side effects and precautions of 5-HTP?

Drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain are common side effects. Since 5-HTP increases serotonin levels, you also may experience worsening of mood initially when you start (similar to SSRI medications) and decrease in libido. Certain medications that affect serotonin levels should also not be taken together, such as SSRIs, triptans and St. John's Wort, which may cause serotonin syndrome.
